$1000 Mystery Car, Blown Motor? Bad Transmission? Did we make a good Buy?
Hello UA-cam,
Today, we picked up a $1,000 project car. It has a no crank, no start condition. A shop told the previous owner that the engine is blown and will be close to $8k to fix it. Follow along the journey to see if we can fix this for cheap and get it back on the road.
Cheers!

I would replace the engine oil with transmission fluid, run it for about 15 minutes and drain it. Repeat again and also use some marvel mystery oil. I would use a good oil and run it for 500 miles a couple of times and repeat before going for a 3000 mile oil change interval.

This is the incorrect way to do this repair. Proper way is to pull the engine out and do a tear down and inspect most likely a replacement engine. This repair being done causes more damage to the engine and blocks oil passages and other ports 😂😂😂😂

Thanks for the comments Castro, appreciate the feedback. Pulling the engine and tearing it apart was not an option for this young kid. We just wanted to help get the motor cleaned up the best we could. Leaving it alone was not an option, so we went through a series of flushes to restore it. The results have been very good and the engine seems to be doing great. Be sure to check out the follow up video here - ua-cam.com/video/XFsHnrt0l3w/v-deo.html Cheers!

I’m amazed that you were able to fit a torque wrench in the wheel well @19:25 for the top caliber bolt, with the torque wrench handle pointing up! Was that some sort of special short-handled torque wrench? My Kobalt 3/8 torque wrench is 17” long, and could never fit in that scenario.

Thanks for the comments Billy, hard to know exactly how many miles since the last oil change but definitely seems like way more than 6k miles. We are thinking more like 12-15k miles sine the last oil change based on what the internals look like. He has had it since around 30k and claimed to have changed the oil 4-5 during this period. I'm sure the cheap oil changes at Jiffy Lube did not help the situation. Be sure to check out the follow up video here - ua-cam.com/video/XFsHnrt0l3w/v-deo.html Cheers!

I always wonder how many of "us" are out there? When I say us I'm referring to guys (and gals) that are OCD on maintenance. The complete opposite of this owner. We bought my wife a 99 Lexus RX300 in 2008 with 125k miles and today sixteen years later, it has 404k. Thats with religious 3k oil changes and regular maintenance I do myself. Being in the rust belt It's starting to get some rust around the rear wheel fender but still runs. We just bought a 2017 CX-5 with 125k and while I'm not so sure the 2.5 four will run as long as the 3.0 v6 in the Lexus, if we hit 350k I'd be happy.

Thanks for the comments, there are probably not enough out there that are religious with their maintenance. Hopefully we have done enough to salvage the motor. We have been very happy with our $500 Lexus ES330 purchase, both the 1MZ-FE & 3MZ-FE V6 are very reliable motors. Plus the cars are super cheap, so you can find some good deals out there. Thanks for responding & your video was very helpful. I just wish they would have better build quality with the prices they charge! The handle shouldn't be flimsy plastic & the way to remove it should be simplified if they do want to make it so difficult even their own techs don't want to do the job they just tell you to get a whole door panel lol & you are right I do love my '06 x5 I haven't owned it long enough to know the headaches repairs will bring me along the way but it rides & drives great for now & good power for a 6cyl I was told the v8 was fun but less reliable! Looking forward to more of your videos as I attempt to keep these things on the road as long as I can

Personally, I would have Tee'd off from the outside and ran a hose through the original hole you capped off for the "blow gun". I also would have put a hook for the blow gun off to the side to keep it out of the way so not to dragged or damaged while using the cabinet. I would have mounted the ballast/controller outside of the cabinet as I wouldn't want to hit it with the blasting gun or risk dust getting inside the unit. They do make/sell extension wires for led lights like them. I also would wire up the light switch to utilize the "GFI" switch on the outlet to prevent any damage to the lights. The way that is being wired, the GFI is only going to protect what ever is plugged in to the outlet as the light bypasses it within the pig tails.

    • @BradleysGarage

Thanks for the suggestion Todd, it just doesn't seem like there is enough oil flowing in the cylinder head to fully remove all that sludge. Sorry to hear that David, it sounds like the starter may not be fully seated into the transmission housing. If you are confident the clutch pack and throw-out bearing were installed correctly, then the misaligned starter is all that we can think of. Get the front wheels off the ground and check the transmission movement. Does everything rotate freely with the transmission in neutral? How about if you put it in gear, does everything still rotate without any funny sounds? Let us know, Cheers!

In my experience, talking with managers at places I've used for decades (without any problems), it depends on the MANAGEMENT, like so many places, re Jiffy Lube. For managers that care and want repeat business and recommendations, just like regular car maintenance/repair shops, you can do OK. I ALWAYS double check the oil level and cleanliness of the oil after an oil change to at least make sure that bad employees or someone having a bad day doesn't cause a disaster. Obviously, you might have real bad luck one time, or run into a bad/crooked shop. There's a Goodyear shop near me that I'd NEVER let my car get inside that garage. And their reputation generally matches that.

Thanks for sharing Roger, he has been going there for the past 30k miles so we are not sure what work has actually been done. Hopefully we have done enough to salvage the motor. We just posted the 3k mile update video if you haven't checked it out yet - ua-cam.com/video/QrJ0B-KXTw0/v-deo.html Cheers!

That makes sense, I'm sure if you car suddenly dies, you would sit there and crank it over and over since it wouldn't really make any sense. Stay tuned for part 2 coming this week. Cheers!

He was running on unfiltered oil the new filter if it was ever changed would clog the filter and open the bypass. Once the bypass is open you are running on unfiltered oil shortening the critical components and abilities to maintain compression.

I had Opel Astra 1.4 for service for oil leaks, customer bought it recently, the leak was from oil filter base/oil cooler. Replaced the oil cooler and gaskets, changed oil, customer comes back after 2 weeks for same leaks. It turns out the the new oil cooler got clogged thanks to new oil that started to flush some debris from the engine. I removed the valve cover and oil pan to see engine in similar state as it is seen here. I cleaned everything (oil pan is very important at this point, lots of stuff deposits there), put it back together, engine flush with new filter, drain, new filter again and new oil and only then oil leaks were fixed.

Thank you. I just bought a new filter Mann for passat b7 2.0 TDI 2012, it's slightly shorter than the previous filter. But fits perfectly. Does it matter?

Thanks for the question, as long as you are using Mann Filter # PU8008 for the 2012-2014 TDI, you should be good. The 2015 TDI uses Mann Filter # PU8028, so be sure they didn't send you the wrong one. Cheers!

We were also surprised that Jiffy Lube actually looked under the oil cap before starting any work. They must have been sued before for engine damage and are not taking on any liability in the future. The funny thing is that is where he has been taking his car for the past 30k miles. So we are not sure if they skipped a few oil changes here and there. Thanks again for the comments, Cheers!

Great video, Why the plug/T ? Why not just an elbow ?

    • @BradleysGarage
      @BradleysGarage 3 дні тому

Thanks for the question David. We chose to use a T under the lower door flap so we can unscrew the drain plug to remove the old blast media. It's less mess than opening the door flap but you can definitely use an elbow instead. It comes down to personal preference on what you'd like to use. Good luck on you blast cabinet project. Cheers!
